Core to understanding emotion is how subjective experiences are signaled in the face. However, studies have largely focused on six prototypical facial expressions, and mostly on the perception rather than production of facial expression. We’ve examined over 50k recordings of wide-ranging facial reactions to videos in the U.S., Japan, and more. A small subset are represented below. We’re discovering new dimensions of meaning in complex facial movements.
