The perception of emotion in facial expression has been a central narrative within emotion science, but the focus has largely been on 6 prototypical expressions. We examined people’s recognition of facial/bodily expression in 1500 images. We discovered that people could reliably identify 28 different categories of emotion, bridged by smooth gradients in expression. (Cowen & Keltner, 2019, Am Psych)
