We performed the first study of how facial expressions are used in everyday life worldwide. To do so, we gathered 6 million videos from around the world, trained a machine learning algorithm to measure 16 kinds of facial expression, and compared the contexts in which those facial expressions occurred in 12 world regions comprising 144 countries (Cowen et al., 2020, Nature)
